Yogi G & The Family Tree

Yogi-G and The Family Tree is the new band of Happy Mondays Founding Member and Drummer, Gaz Whelan. Started back in 2021 as a reaction to the lockdowns, initially a collaboration with various artists’ it soon gained momentum and turned into a serious project.

As hopes of a new Happy Mondays album dissipated, Gaz put more of his efforts into writing material for this project, in his own words, "I got fed up waiting around to try to agree to write a new Mondays album, when it became apparent, we couldn't agree, I decided to do my own”.

Yogi-G and The Family Tree still retain the “Madchester” groove, as you would expect from the Mondays drummer but with a more grown up sensibility, taking inspiration from their record collections with names like, The Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, it’s an eclectic fusion of styles that somehow works, from the gospel inspired dance along Shine On (Brother) to the deep and melancholic Black Symphony through to the very “Mondays” sounding Blind Man and The Monkey, it’s a refreshing fusion that stands out.
